Ebola: health ministry awaits results on patient

A 37 year old man, who had travelled to Africa recently, was isolated at the SSR hospital this morning, and then transferred to the isolation ward at the Souillac hospital this Wednesday 17th of september. Health minister, Lormus Bundhoo, indicated that the patient bore symptoms of an infectious disease. He added that we cannot for now talk of Ebola but that a series of tests have been made on patient; results are still pending.

As of now there is no vaccine to neutralise the Ebola virus. Though, a trial of an experimental vaccine has reportedly just begun in Oxford, UK.  As of September 6, there had been 4,293 cases of Ebola in the West African outbreak, resulting in 2,296 deaths . Some patients are able to recover, but those who have died are the ones who haven't been able to develop a significant immune response to the virus at the time of death.

According to WHO, Ebola spreads through human-to-human transmission, with infection resulting from direct contact (through broken skin or mucous membranes) with the blood, secretions, organs or other bodily fluids of infected people, and indirect contact with environments contaminated with such fluids. Burial ceremonies in which mourners have direct contact with the body of the deceased person can also play a role in the transmission of Ebola. Men who have recovered from the disease can still transmit the virus through their semen for up to 7 weeks after recovery from illness.

Symptoms that show up 2 to 21 days after infection usually include high fever, headache, joint and muscle aches, sore throat, weakness, stomach pain and lack of appetite.
