Embrace the rage

We live in dangerous times. Not because we face the menace of a police state, which, in passing, must be one of the most undisciplined and shambolic tools of repression ever conceived. No, the true clear and present danger is fatigue. The population is getting tired of all the scandals that have kept the country in a vise of disgust and despair since the beginning of the year. Indeed, even the prime minister has appealed to put this turmoil behind us. Now’s not the time to give up though. If we let the culprits turn this page, they’ll throw the whole bloody book at us. That’s why it’s vital that we keep our rage alive. Better yet, we have to nourish and nurture it. It’s the only weapon we have left.

For the past eight months, it’s been MedPoint this and MedPoint that, so much so that a sort of lassitude is starting to set in. Could it be part of the plan? Possibly. That’s why it’s more imperative than ever to remain indignant at the sheer nerve of those who hatched the plan. Of course, the ICAC has yet to complete its investigation but, if we’re frank, it’d be more than a little rash to expect too much of its findings. Let’s look at what we do know. For starters, both Labour and the MSM were complicit in the scandal. That’s virtually indisputable for the simple reason that the deal could not have gone through without the consent of both parties. Our leaders decided to screw us, it’s that straightforward.

Nobody wants to accept this, of course, for doing so will be tantamount to admitting their own guilt. You see, that’s the thing with corruption it takes two to tango. At this juncture, ascertaining who exactly instigated the affair and who executed it is almost a moot point anyway. Because neither party wants to fess up to its own role in the affair they’re trying to get the other to take the fall. The best way to go about that particular job is to use the tried and tested political tactic of character assassination. And it seems to be working. Debates about the MedPoint scandal increasingly seem to revolve around the personalities of the different protagonists rather than the fact that they were all in power when it happened! And now all this talk of coalitions is muddying the waters even further. If we let this pass, we’ll be condemning the country to wallow in mediocrity and corruption for a generation or more. In Parliament on Tuesday, the prime minister deflected the leader of the opposition’s Private Notice Question on the ICAC’s inquiries into a slew of scandals by stating that the commission is doing its job and that “the fight against corruption is the fight of all of us in this House and of all citizens of this country”. If he were truly serious about establishing the truth about MedPoint, Navin Ramgoolam would make the minutes of that fateful cabinet meeting public. The fact that he hasn’t tells us all we need to know about who’s on which side of that particular fence.

There are no two ways about it we were robbed and now we’re being lied to. How much longer will we let our leaders proffer pious statements about inexistent struggles against graft while corruption eats the country from within? How long is a piece of string? One thing is sure though, if we’re to have a fighting chance of extricating ourselves from this morass, we’re going to need all the rage we have. So instead of rejecting our anger, we should embrace it.
