Disrespectful politicians: The show continues…

These kind of thrashes coming from a senior politician must have a dire consequence on the political scene. The Vice-Prime Minister, Showkutally Soodhun, has been acting again irresponsibly. Most importantly, he has been disrespectful and extremely rude towards an audience, especially to a lady who rightly pointed out to him that he has been completely out of subject. This is a sign of anxiety when he is unable to handle the pressure on both occasions.

I can go further now to comment a brand new saga by the Deputy Chief Whip, Ravi Rutnah. Oh my God! This is ridiculous. Here is another oncoming senior politician lashing out at a female journalist. Another sign of a weak personality. Some of them seem to be losing their heads already, so prematurely in politics. I wonder what would be their future goals after spending some more years in politics. Surely, an own goal.

In fact, in their silliness, they either fail to realise the implications of their garbage or they do not give a damn, thinking that they are untouchable. Perhaps, they can be classified as political hooligans. Now, maybe in other civilised and democratic country, at least one of them would have been arrested and made to face the music according to the law of the land, but, alas, not here.

On the contrary, they dance according to their own tune, including a senior citizen politician who used foul language during an interview by a journalist saying: “Mo p.. ar zot.” Guess who! What a political model. Marvellous!

The responsibility lies squarely at the door of the authority who has clearly failed to execute their duty according to the law. It appears that someone at the top is pulling the strings, hence limiting the power of the authority. However, if the latter has any conscience, he should go ahead and execute his duty responsibly irrespective of the consequences.

It is sad and shameful that the protagonist is still at large and is defended by a failing regime who has lost all credibility. We have a Prime Minister who is in power but has no authority.

When there is disrespect for the separation of powers, it is bound to lead to chaos and anarchy. This chaotic situation will continue for years to come, unless we stop electing families and their friends to represent us in Parliament. There seems to be no will to change. In fact, some are more than ready to protect political friends in government.

Politicians live in the same social and socioeconomic circles and the most powerful figures in government are their friends or related in more than one way. There is no desire to expose any wrongdoing. Those who raise their voices will quickly be silenced by any means.

Perhaps,we, Mauritians, have become too complacent to voice our opinions on the radio, which is good, but not good enough as words disappears quickly in the air. At this stage, we need a wake up call and alarm ourselves because we never know what is in store for us and who knows what would be the next saga which seems quite predictable given the present political situation.

The adverse effect of this political situation is creating a huge impact on people’s everyday life and this country is politically and economically unstable as it looks. We need social diversity with good social policies and sensible solutions to promote the lives of the citizens.
