Les trous de Bheenick

We can confidently say most of us are law abiding citizen in this country with endless sense of loyalty and responsibility towards ourselves and state. However, it is also true and unfortunate that a handful believe they are above the rule of law; the untouchable with an attitude that everything is permissible. Even the unsound mind, will at times, have a glimpse of reality.
Navin Ramgoolam’s arrest with millions of rupees in his possession is an indication of the kind of society we live in. This is a society that we have created and accepted for decades. We have, over years, become a society where selfishness and greediness have taken precedent. We are so consumed, rightly so, with our daily chores that we do not care about others wrongdoings; very often unwilling to punish the culprits. Despite being robbed by millions we remain so tolerant. It is unbelievable that a handful still think an ex-Prime Minister is entitled to have millions of unaccounted rupees under his mattress so to speak. While the accused has vowed to clean his reputation or what is left of, due process has to take its course and this justice should not only be done but seen to be done. This is the only way that we teach a lesson to the ‘untouchable’.
The shamefaced Rhundeersing Bheenick famously discovered a ‘trou’ of Rs 800 million years ago as Finance Minister. This time he has come up with a ‘trou de memoire’. He conveniently cannot recall how and why he has confidential, possibly incriminating, documents in his possession. He is also someone with the view that sleeping over millions of rupees is not a crime. Perhaps he is right being someone with foreign currencies himself worth million in his own house. After all we wonder whether he is in anyway conniving with Navin in this whole saga. There is this saying ‘Better to have little, with godliness, than to be rich and dishonest’
One of the issues that fall into consideration is whether the huge amount of money found a week ago carry a taint of illegality? Undoubtedly the citizens have made their own judgement irrespective of the legal arguments that we expect to hear in the next coming days and weeks. The question that many of us ask is this – what moral explains the fact that a person in the highest office hoards such large sum of money whilst the hard working individuals are left to fend for themselves?
The leadership of PTr being questioned following the event, there seems to be a breath of fresh air with the appointment of Arvin Boolell. This is an opportunity for Arvin to bring credibility to the party but he has to resuscitate the PTr first. On the other hand the MMM has renewed their faith in their historical leader Paul Berenger. Is this the definite way forward or is it a missed opportunity for a new start? L’avernir nous en dira!
